Pets experiencing pain or loss of motion stemming from spinal or musculoskeletal disorders, injuries, or other conditions may benefit from veterinary spinal manipulative therapy (VSMT). VSMT is a safe, noninvasive manual therapy that can help restore full range of motion to joints, thereby decreasing pain, promoting healthy musculoskeletal function, and re-establishing healthy neurological connections.
VSMT involves the application of short, controlled forces at precise angles to specific areas of joint restriction, such as the joints along the spinal column.
Conditions that may benefit from VSMT include:
- Subluxations caused by injuries or other activities
- Stiff/tight muscles
- Osteoarthritis and painful joints
- Uneven gait
- Reluctance to go up or down stairs
- Certain types of incontinence
This therapy requires specialized training at an accredited animal chiropractic school and can only be performed by a qualified Doctor of Chiropractic or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. In 2017, Dr. Drewell graduated from the Veterinary Chiropractic Learning Centre — one of only two accredited animal chiropractic/veterinary spinal manipulative therapy schools in Canada. She is also a certified member of the College of Animal Chiropractors.
